Data Sources

  • GDELT Project (DOC 2.0 API): article metadata from worldwide news coverage. Cited as required by the GDELT terms.
  • ReliefWeb (UN OCHA): reports from humanitarian organisations and official bodies.
  • Publisher RSS feeds: world news feeds from BBC News, Al Jazeera, DW, France 24, UN News and The Guardian. We use the headline, link and publication time only, and link to the publisher for the full report.
  • YouTube Data API: video titles, channels and thumbnails, played with the official embedded player.

Maps and imagery

  • NASA Blue Marble and Black Marble (public domain).
  • Natural Earth borders (public domain).
  • Drone, plane and bomb icon shapes based on Lucide (ISC License, lucide.dev).
  • Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, served by OpenFreeMap and Protomaps.

Update schedule

Publisher feeds are checked about every 15 minutes, and other sources every 15 minutes to a few hours. If a source is unavailable, the last collected data stays visible with its update time.

Methodology

Reports are de-duplicated by link and headline, matched to places using a gazetteer of countries and cities, and grouped into one event when they concern the same place within 48 hours and describe the same thing. See the Editorial Policy for display rules and How the map works for a step-by-step explanation.
